Webcam problem Skype on knoppix

For personal reasons I want to have a private operation system on my USB stick.I tried Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 11.04 both have dificulties with the persistence mode.Theirfor I decided to use Knoppix.

After prepearing the US stick and booting into knoppix I started with:

sudo aptitude update

I did not upgrade the system. Just to get ressources updated.

Further download your linux packet on Skype and install. To check your webcam install cheese:

sudo aptitude install cheese

If your camera shows a picture on cheese it might be that your camera does not work on skype.

Theirfore just do the following thing:

sudo apt-get install libv4l-0

Now if you want to start Skype just run this in terminal:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/ skype

For 64bit systems:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/ skype

To get it automated on 64 bit just modify your profile fileand add the following line in /etc/profile or ~/.bash_profile file:

export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/

on 32 bit

export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/
